Our product is a cost and energy effective, portable and scalable water disinfection unit composed by commercially available, compact filtration units, and a proprietary deep UV disinfection cell. The novel part is that the UV radiation is provided by tiny, energy efficient devices called light emitting diodes (LED). This technology can be translated into markets where microorganisms are causing increasing concern; water, surfaces ad air, offering the company numerous growth opportunities.
The problem:
Standard UV assisted water filtration systems require line voltage and massive use of bulky mercury lamps; hence they are not portable, and they cannot be used in areas of the world with chronic deficiencies of potable water or in the event of natural disasters, such as post-hurricane scenarios. In addition, these systems cannot be used at faucet level (retrograde infection of goosenecks is a major concern in hospitals) and the increasing use of mercury lamps contributes to health hazard and environmental pollution by heavy metals.
Our solution:
Our product completely eliminates the problems listed above. UV LEDs are significantly smaller than mercury lamps and can be packaged in watertight packages, faucet tips as well as pipe applications. UV LEDs operate at ~6V/20mA and are ideal for battery/solar powered applications; they do not contain mercury and are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional mercury lamps; they do not contain heavy metals and they do not require special handling/disposal. UV LEDs are more robust than fragile quartz tube lamps; they fade away and do not burn out. Individual chips last up to 1000 hours, and provide < 2mW optical power. Multi chip clusters can be used where more optical power is required.
